WHICH LOCAL / INTERNATIONAL INTERIOR DESIGNERS DO YOU ASPIRE TO?
For me, ARRCC epitomises exceptional interior design. Based in Cape Town, this outstanding design studio has developed some of the most magnificent projects I have seen, both locally and internationally. It is obvious that they work in collaboration with architects to achieve a perfectly complemented architectural and interior space. They have a multi-dimensional focus within their dramatically voluminous spaces with which they take full advantage of to break the boundaries of normality. I love their use of bold form and natural finishes, which boasted all throughout their spaces with an excessive display of fine attention to detail. Their interiors come across as a wholesome, artistic sculpture which could presumably appear as a reflection of the inhabitant’s personalities and lifestyles. A mere glimpse at any of their inspiring projects captures a sense of contemporary elegance and luxury.

WHAT IS YOUR PET PEEVE DESIGN FLAW?
Matchy-matchy furniture. When the sofa, occasional chairs, TV unit and side tables all have the same fabric, style and varnished wood finish. This kind of gives away that your entire living room was probably purchased all at once from a supermarket furniture department, taking away any sense of personalisation to the space. Make a space interesting by incorporating different tones, patterns, textures and finishes (which still work well together, of course) which are a reflection of your personality and lifestyle.
IF YOU COULD TRAVEL ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD IT BE?
Road tripping around New Zealand is definitely near the top of my bucket list. It has the perfect combination of beautiful natural landscapes, exciting cityscapes, and interesting cultural history which I can not wait to one day explore.
MEET THE TEAM
Who are we and what do we do?
We are an Interior Design studio based in Hillcrest, Durban. We pride ourselves in creating and designing amazing Interior spaces, be it Residential, Corporate, Hospitality, Retail and the likes. We don’t just do curtains and cushions as some people may think… We involve ourselves just like an Architect would, from drafting your plans to designing custom cabinetry and overseeing the entire build from start to finish.
Do you have formal training behind you?
Yes, Nicky Goldstone, The Director and lead designer at Designs by Day studied a BTech In Interior Design at DUT and graduated Cum laude.
Kaylin Cameron, our Junior Designer studied a BDes in Interior Design at Inscape Design Collage and also graduated Cum Laude.
We at Designs by Day only employ professionals that are well trained and equipped with the best in order to give our clients the best service we possibly can.
What is your best advice when designing?
Always consider ceilings and lighting. Everyone seems to forget about this when designing. So often clients and designers get so caught up with the pretties and the amazing pieces going in on ground level that they forget the ‘shell’ of the home as a whole. We at Designs by Day utilize the ENTIRE space when designing. Since you are paying for all these square meters in your home, you need to appreciate them in terms of a well designed space. Amazing bulkheads and lighting details are a MUST in any interior.
What colour do you love to hate in an Interior?
Orange. We have never been a fan of orange as it dates too quickly. We believe in creating spaces that will last you 5-10 years on trend and not date when the new season arrives.
Favourite design piece at present?
Vibia Wireflow lights – We just love how they can transform a space so simply. The versatility of the product is amazing. It creates a WOW effect that is understated yet sophisticated.
Why we are an Integral part of the Design Team?
We specialize in helping you with three main overall areas of your project: aesthetics, finances and management. If you are not experienced in all three of these areas, then you definitely need our support.
Being practicing professionals in the industry, we are up to date with trends, developments and reliable suppliers, and are constantly exposed to new information. We transpose this knowledge artistically and technically into visually appealing results, without being shy of style, trend or taking risks, and knowing confidently that our designs will reflect our clients.
We form excellent relationships with other contractors working on the project and often become the key liaising person, keeping communication between ourselves, contractors, architects, builders and the client open and regular, to avoid time and money-wasting mistakes, and keep the project on schedule. We also have access to various suppliers who only sell to trade and not to the public
What is the difference between a Decorator and a Designer?
Decorators and designers are often mistaken for being the same thing. However, there is a crucial distinction between our job titles which is important to know, to ensure that you are hiring the right individual for the job.
A decorator focusses on the aesthetic appeal of the space, stressing more over type, colour, texture and pattern, than structural planning. They don’t always require formal training or education. Their eye is groomed to recognise scale, proportion, colour, size and texture. Decorators will work with furniture makers, upholsterers and décor suppliers etc.
A designer also performs the job of a decorator, however, a decorator is not qualified to do the job of a designer
We have been formally educated in our field for numerous years, and have been awarded with diplomas or degrees following our education. We are trained to look beyond aesthetics, and accommodate the users’ behaviour within the spaces they occupy.
We satisfy the needs and resources of our clients by incorporating aesthetically pleasing technical solutions to the shell of a building, creating an efficiently functional and beneficially enhanced space. We believe a space must relate to its surroundings and user’s lifestyle, whilst following regulatory requirements and methodological processes. We work closely with contractors and provide them with relevant working drawings to follow, which have been drawn on accurate, specialist digital software.
